It was in September 1981 - the exact date is not known - that the cargo boat Chrisoula K. ran into the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef. The vessel had come from Italy, was bound for Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, and its cargo consisted essentially of blocks of stone. The reasons of the disaster are to be understanded, anyway the most likely one is a navigation error; the violence of the impact threw the Chrisoula K. right onto the reef: the bow section broke away and was left perched on the corals, the remaining three quarters of the vessel tipped over, falling onto the starboard flank with the stern pointing north-east. Fortunately the entire crew was rescued.
